The Man who shoes horses : The Farrier

In the midst of a developing digital landscape, Made by Hand is a series of films which celebrate the beautiful purity of traditional craftsmanship. As small windows into other worlds, each film focuses on portraying the uniqueness of a craft and the artist who dedicates their life to perfecting it. Although true beauty asks for no attention, Made By Hand spotlights the people who deserve a bit of it…

Farrier - This film was shot in rural Lincolnshire with the farrier Mark Trussler.

The art of making bread

Since the COVID lockdown in the UK, I’ve been really getting into my breadmaking - for the times I couldn’t be in the workshop. This is a beautiful little video from Kinfolk about the process. song: "oil thumbprints" - bexar bexar

The Art of Making, Alma Flamenca

The setting was already intriguing. A Greek from Pontus, living in Athens is a luthier of some of the best Spanish guitars. His name is Vassilis and he is not only an accomplished luthier but also a charming human. We spend 3 days with him in his small and packed lab in Athens, where we learned a lot, laughed a lot and in general had a great time. The end result combined with the music of Edstard left everyone more than satisfied.

The Birth Of A Tool. Part I. Axe Making (by John Neeman Tools)

This is a short documentary movie that shows the whole process of how John Neeman Tools are being hand crafted.

"It is a tragedy of the first magnitude that millions of people have ceased to use their hands as hands. Nature has bestowed upon us this great gift which is our hands. If the craze for machinery methods continues, it is highly likely that a time will come when we shall be so incapacitated and weak that we shall begin to curse ourselves for having forgotten the use of the living machines given to us by God."
Mahathma Ghandi

Made by Hand / No 3 The Beekeeper

Local farmer Megan Paska has witnessed beekeeping as it morphed from an illegal (and possibly crazy) habit to a sustainable, community-supported skill. Mirroring beekeeping’s own ascendance, she found more than just a living: “This is the first time in my life when I’ve just felt absolutely on the right path.”

Made by Hand / No 2 The Knife Maker

A project from bureauofcommongoods.com, Made by Hand is a new short film series celebrating the people who make things by hand—sustainably, locally, and with a love for their craft.

In our second film, we meet writer turned knife maker Joel Bukiewicz of Cut Brooklyn. He talks about the human element of craft, and the potential for a skill to mature into an art. And in sharing his story, he alights on the real meaning of handmade—a movement whose riches are measured in people, not cash.

Made By Hand/No 1 The Distiller

A project from bureauofcommongoods.com, Made by Hand is a new short film series celebrating the people who make things by hand—sustainably, locally, and with a love for their craft.

In our inaugural film, we visit the Breuckelen Distilling Company, the first gin distiller in Brooklyn since prohibition. Founder Brad Estabrooke talks about starting from nothing and the imperfect process of perfecting a craft. His experience bears a lesson for us all: knowing you could fail brings you that much closer to success.

The Hat Maker

We arrived at the shop early in the morning as the first light entered the room. Dust particles danced through sunbeams as we began to move items around the space, debating wardrobe and the shot sequence. Nick entered and listened to what we had planned. He nodded his head, pulled a piece of beaver felt down from a shelf, set it on the table and began to work.

Worries of the wardrobe, makeup, and set dressing fell away. It didn’t matter who he was, what he was wearing, or whose hat he was making – in front of the camera camera was a man and his craft, the beauty of his work uncluttered. Watching Nick work froze our day in time and if it weren’t for the light blinking on the camera we would have had no reference to the year.

In a society that often forgets the importance of making something by hand, Nick Fouquet’s artistry is a reminder of what is at the core of this country. We left inspired and grateful to be able to capture a timeless discipline passed down through generations.

Emil Boards

Today we came across this little beauty of a product. Since I was young I’ve always been into skating, so when I heard about these new skateboards from these dudes in Berlin, I thought it’d definitely be worth a check out. Love the wood, love the simplicity, and love the square.

This is what they have to say about themselves –

 HI, WE ARE EMIL.
WE MAKE SQUARE SKATEBOARDS.

We are a small band of good friends from Munich, Germany. Inspired by the movie “Back to the Future – One“ we started to build square skateboards in the beginning of 2013. Our boards are made for surfing the sidewalk, combining our skateboarding roots, and our love for surfing. Being totally stoked by riding the first prototype, we knew that this would be in our heads for a couple of time. Having made a lot more prototypes by hand and getting an awesome feedback from friends, friends friends and people on the streets, we decided to get them done by a professional skateboard manufacturer. And here you go, the first Emil is ready to roll.

THE BOARDS

We designed the boards as pure as possible. Square shape, no convex, no concarve, no concave, no rocker, no camber, and of course no batteries. Emil is a board with wheels, not more, but by no means less! We tackle the path back to basics, referring to the first days of skateboarding history, always keeping in mind to not just produce a slick, but even well performing product. Made of layered maple wood and fixed to modern trucks and wheels, our decks are back to the future! With Emil you can enjoy a relaxed ride through town or have a kick-ass surf on the sidewalk.

Surf square!

Emil,
Munich, April 2014

Love the way form follows sound and the simplicity of the slip casting process to musical instrument. I would absolutely over to make a few things using slip casting.
